6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
From the very beginning we have been misinterpreting God’s mission. The disciples continuously thought differently than Christ. He told them what was happening and now they are curious if he was going to free them from Roman rule now! So, Christ re centers their focus. He explains that He was sending the Spirit so that all those who believe could be witnesses for Christ… yeah, that was the last thing HE said…
The very last thing Christ said, and should be the center of our lives is: “you will be my witnesses.” Are we doing this? The entire purpose of everything Christ did was so that He could pay for our sins and lead us to witness to others. However, our postmodern society has led Christians to forego this command and create a “personalized” Christianity. We have taken all the public aspects of our faith out and replaced them with this “non encroaching” walk that doesn’t openly proclaim Christ’s deity.
Jesus Christ is going to return the same way He left, and when we meet Him HE will respond to us in relation to how we are carrying out His mission. what will He say to you?
God help me to not get caught up in this personal, confidential Christianity. Keep me bold, proclaiming Your name at every opportunity possible. Help me to be faithful on Your mission, and not recreate one of my own. Amen.
Christ said to be a witness. So start talking! Pray for opportunities and discernment as to when God would have you speak! 🙂
