42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
We are going to work backwards through these verses. Starting at the end of verse 47. Hopefully we are PRIORITIZING (throwback to yesterday’s sermon) the Lord adding to the number of those who are saved within our community daily! Ideally our congregation longs for a revival in our town, praying for fire to start in the hearts of those who have been cold and unmotivated. So how did it occur in Acts? Well… the text right before this says that they were eating together, enjoying one another’s company, and helping whoever among them had need.
Humans are built for community. We hunger for significance, relationships, true care from other people! When the Church, empowered by the Spirit, begins to live in this way we will see massive revival! We are not going to see massive numbers of people flocking towards the Church by preaching good deeds. We have to focus on PEOPLE! We have to share comfort with one another, pain, doubt, joy, success! Our churches will grow and flourish when our congregations stop living isolated, unattached lives. Our churches will grow when we don’t just relate on Sundays but it permeates our day to day life. Our churches will grow and flourish when we realize that PEOPLE MATTER!
God I am so selfish. I am so self absorbed! Please shift my focus from a day to day “Me” centered life to being focused on what the Spirit would have me do, WHO He would have me love and cherish today as God does. Break me from my fleshly focus on life and help me be intentional towards relating with others and sharing my life, struggles, and accomplishments. Lead me to have Your heart.
Evaluate your life, do you have constant relational connections with people? Do you have someone you are connected with and share your struggles, your needs, your accomplishments? If not, get to it. Find someone. Find someone you can connect with and start growing with. We are NOT made to go through life alone. If you have a spouse, that’s awesome use them too. HOWEVER, you should find someone outside of your house (same gender) to grow with. Perhaps find a couple who you AND your spouse can connect with. Find someone you can start relating with. I feel like I remember a verse that KINDA talks about growing through relating to other people. ;P
