5 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.
3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”
5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. 6 Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.
7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”
“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”
9 Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”
10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.
A lie. A lie about something they were free to do as they pleased. They felt compelled by their flesh to lie about something they had no REAL need to lie about. They could have simply said, “nah not for me, here’s just SOME of the money.” No one had told them they had to give up everything. They had a choice. Obviously giving up everything was a “better” choice, but they could choose that on their own. So, they were punished, all because of a lie.
How many of us are lying daily? How many of us put on a show that we are “giving it all” when in “full knowledge [we] keep back part of the money for [ourselves].” No one is FORCING you to lay out your entire life. No one is FORCING you to choose God over the American dream. No one is FORCING you to choose God’s will over your own. God is a beautiful gentleman and will not force you into sanctification. It is suggested, but not mandated and strictly enforced. So lets be honest. It is key so that others can see truly where we are, how we feel, what we need. If we are dishonest there is no way to truly be on mission together in one mind (we discussed the necessity of that yesterday).
We need honesty so that we can have unity. Lying, misleading others simply slows the path to progress.
Keep my lips pure. Keep me from lying to others, myself, and You. Show me how I am actively misleading myself Father. Help me see past the misdirection I have put in my life. Help me to see the shortcomings, and needs that are here. Show me where I am holding on dearly to parts of my life, and give me the power to let go.
Are you making your life look more “holier than thou” then it likely is? You may be painting a beautifully DISGUSTING picture of salvation for the lost. They may be looking at your life and not understanding how you can give up everything in such a happy manner. Yet you are breaking on the inside. You are painting a picture that does not truly reflect your life and your wondering why no one around you is asking how they can get to know Jesus like you. Are you being honest with your life, or are you sugar coating everything? It’s time that we are HONEST and show the world how we truly feel so that they can connect with us and understand this isn’t a walk in the park.
