In one of our previous gatherings we discussed how we are supposed to be making disciples (that’s the commission for us in Matthew 28:19-20)… yet our Sunday thing hasn’t really fulfilled that. Not only that, but our Sunday thing is generally a priority. So our prioritized “gathering” has handicapped us from doing what God called us to do. We discussed how the military makes effective soldiers: train, refine the training, train some more. Here we are, called to be ambassadors and soldiers in a foreign land but we leave generation after generation more and more distant from God’s mission.
The truth is we aren’t told perfectly how to “gather together.” Hebrews 10:25 says not to forsake assembling together. It even says we are to “encourage one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” We are told to address the needs around us (Acts 4:32-35, 20:35, Hebrews 13:16, James 1:27), be orderly (1 Cor 14:40), disciple and evangelize (2 Tim 2:2, Matthew 28:19). The process is up to us. We are mandated to follow man’s traditions. In fact, just like the military we should be adapting our meetings, plans, etc. to fit our local fulfillment of the greater mission (just like the military). Yet here we are with a frail, failing “church” system. It isn’t drawing people in because it’s dead, isn’t evangelizing because it’s afraid, and isn’t discipling because it’s unequipped.
I explained the roots of our service setup on Sunday as well…. it isn’t a God ordained system, its and outflow of pagan practice, and middle age routine. If our system is failing, shouldn’t we reevaluate it and change?
What is more important, fulfilling God’s commission or fulfilling man’s tradition?
In our current “system” we will see near no one in our next generation answering “Here am I! Send me.” when the Lord asks “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Isaiah 6:8 (ESV).
We are changing. Will you join us? You’re going to see things change a bit over the coming year. A lot of discipleship, a lot of basic truth being solidified, and a lot of evangelism and discipleship call to actions. Be prepared, and enjoy the presence and power of the Holy Spirit as He washes over your life and emanates from you! 🙂
Pray asking God to prepare your heart for a deeper commitment to Him. Ask Him to help you be willing to change daily, hourly, moment by moment even.
