15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
In our last devotion (read that if you haven’t) we discussed how the American idea of “independence” is actively working against the Church. This mindset is slowly removing the tools that God gave the Church to “build itself up in love.” Do we realize that if we let go of the setup of the Church we are also letting go of the potential for us to grow together correctly?
Verses 15-16 show that when we work together correctly and have people leading us we come into unity, we grow, and are considered to be working “properly.” It’s the complete opposite of what we saw in the previous verses. We are able to be equipped, held together, and properly connected.
We desire a close knit group that responds to Christ like they did in Acts 2… yet we don’t realize it will start when the body realizes it’s positions, ability, and purpose. We have a completely skewed setup and are wondering why it seems powerless, insufficient, or just plain broken… As we open His Word we see what God desired us to have and then we look at what we actually have, no bueno. How beautiful would it be if the Church could get back to it’s roots so that it could be filled with people who are being built up and are growing in knowledge. Instead we have a system that after years of involvement are still left wondering about the majority of Scripture.
Yet we can rest assured, if Christ could develop the first century Church out of Judaism and on the heels of Christ’s crucifixion then we can trust He will enable us to return to this if He deems it necessary! That doesn’t mean it won’t take work, but that He is able! We will never do anything of lasting purpose in our own ability. It is through Him and His Spirit alone we find ourselves being obedient to His work and fulfilling His purpose. Let us be motivated as we look around and see how much work He has prepared for us to follow Him in! 🙂 The task seems giant, but what an opportunity for great things to be played out in our lives. The first century Church experienced an incredible journey with the Spirit because there was so much to be done… Here we are in the same boat, will we step out on the water?
Spend 1-2 minutes thanking God that He is sufficient in producing what He wants done through us. Then spend 2-3 minutes asking Him to help you hear Him speak and be obedient.
Start talking with friends, how many believers do you know that are decades into their walk but still baby christians? That’s probably not a problem we should change right? 😅 What if we noticed that major flaw and looked to the Lord to fix it instead of accepting it as the norm?
