As you’re listening to this song and preparing your mind for your devotions be reminded that He is defending you EVEN when you don’t realize you need a defense. “You go before I know that You’ve even gone to win my war. You come back with the head of my enemy. You come back and You call it my victory.”
Oh Lord, as I read help me to be focused. Help me to not be overtaken by the enemy who desires, above all, to strip me from my relationship with You. Help me to see Your Word as the most valuable asset in life. Help me to hear You speak, and listen.
13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
We start with “Therefore” meaning what Paul is about to write is in light of what we have heard so far: we are at war, it is a spiritual war, and we have a mighty God who provides us with mighty power! Then Paul reminds us WE have to put on this armor. These are assets God has given us to use. He doesn’t force, but passionately asks us to believe and obey.
Next Paul reminds us that “the day of evil” is coming. Though today we may not have significant warfare, the enemy is just regrouping. Notice that it doesn’t say “put on the full armor of God WHEN the day of evil comes,” rather it is a precursor to “the day of evil.” This is something we are called to do BEFORE we are in the midst of battle. We shouldn’t wait until we are bleeding out and totally incapable of standing to try and pull our armor on. It will be to late. Not to late for grace, and not to late for our God to swoop in and overthrow the enemy, but to late to avoid the damage that has already happened. Don the armor TODAY not tomorrow. Do not wait. We are at war and you must be ready.
I am overwhelmed with reminders of war as I type this. In the army I was on a QRF team (quick reaction force) which means our job was to respond to groups who were on mission and took excessive fire they could not eliminate, or took too many casualties. The reality was, we came when things were past the point of “normal warfare.” When we showed up we came in hot. There was no question as to IF we would receive contact, rather how much we would need to throw down to eliminate the threat. We EXPECTED chaos from the coalition medical needs and overpowering enemy. When we finally eliminated the threat and recovered as many personnel as possible (some where to far gone) we would escort the team back to base. THEN we would start to evaluate the conflict and see what we could do to fix the next situation.
Unfortunately we couldn’t go back in time and avoid the injuries and death that occurred. Instead we were able to see the faults and make a plan to implement BEFORE receiving another attack. This is where we are in the passage. God has done the scouting and has determined the necessary resources to avoid significant casualty. He has given us the tools necessary to fend off Satan. He has given us the ability to “stand [our] ground, and after [we] have done everything, to stand.” He is the best QRF (the military position I just spoke about) and has already done the evaluation! He is faithful to come in when you call for air support however, He has given us the tools to move effectively through this enemies territory.
Do not forsake your battle gear. Instead, don the armor, be prepared, be battle ready.
It’s true God. I wait for the enemy to attack before I begin to prepare. Help me. I know Your Word is sufficient and filled with truth! Remind me to put on this armor NOW before the enemy attacks. Also remind me that You are my QRF and though I am called to prepare so that we can defeat Satan together, You are faithful to rescue me when I am overtaken.
Just like yesterdays post on Ephesians 6:12, some people are simply unaware of God’s truth regarding this. They use the Bible and their relationship AS their QRF. So they enter warfare ill equipped, easily overtaken, and susceptible to the easiest of attacks. Help others by TELLING those around you about this truth. Additionally, I have included a Facebook post for you (if you desire).
