17 “But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners, doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! 18 If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a lawbreaker.
19 “For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!”
This: “20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Is that how you are living? It seems many Christians are interested in quoting this verse but don’t think about it. If you are dead, and it is Christ who lives in you, and even in that you live by faith in the Son of God… shouldn’t that mean He directs your life?
It seems like my proverbial soap box, but there are masses of Christians who are dead, and now resurrecting their dead sinful flesh to lead them daily. They wake up being directed by their stomachs, greed, passion, whatever pleases them. Perhaps we have lost connection with what Christianity is? Perhaps we have allowed too much “acceptance” and too much “post modernism” into our lives and perverted what a Christian life should look like.
To not belabor the point I will summarize in this way: If you have been saved you should no longer be living guided by your flesh. That means your life should be defined by communicating and following the one you are an ambassador for. If you are living the same as you did before Christ, something’s wrong. If your priorities are the same as the sinners around you, something’s wrong. Ask yourself, have I truly died, and if so am I still following this dead man?
God You know how easy it is for me to fall back into my old ways. How easy it is for me to desire the same things my dead flesh desires. Habits are hard to break, and I am inclined not to change. God help me to remember my flesh is dead and the only power it has on me is the power of habit. Break that habit, and lead me to death in the flesh.
You have friends who are saved that are being guided by their dead selves. Likely you fall in that realm too at least at times, remind them (and yourself), that guy is dead! You should be looking to God for guidance and direction on the next step.
