16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
I’ve been waiting, pointing out other truths and waiting for this. We’ve talked about how:
1)Sin is a choice, kinda
2)We naturally want the opposite of God.
These have all been truths we can see from surface level reading. Yet there’s another that’s obvious at the surface level. This is the one I have been waiting for since it is what helped me break some significant chains! The third truth is this:
3)You cannot conquer sin without the Holy Spirit.
Listen, you will not overcome sin without the Holy Spirit. If you are not walking with the Spirit daily you can guarantee you’ll be overcome with sin soon. Paul says explicitly that your flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit. If that is true then how can you imagine that you will overcome sin at all without the Spirit helping you?
Unfortunately we live in a generation that has severely detached spirituality from Christianity. We wont say it but it’s like we believe the supernatural, awe inspiring God of the Old and New Testament no longer does anything miraculous aside from justification. We saw all these overly charismatic christians and didn’t want to be grouped in with them. We saw all these overly spiritual people and thought they had gone to far so we pulled back, and took it to the other extreme. The removal of the spiritual realm from christianity is not only inconsistent with the Bible but it is highly crippling for the christian life.
We talk about Satan attacking, spiritual warfare (sometimes), and other things along these lines. We are somehow ok with accepting the spiritual realm when it comes to the negative side. However, we don’t couple that with the Holy Spirit or God’s supernatural movement in our lives. The New Testament saints and all the Old Testament saints experienced a supernaturally involved God, saving them from evil, and helping the conquer enemies! Here we are on the other side of the cross and for some reason we have minimized God’s ability and increased Satan’s. God has performed this gigantic act of salvation and now we have minimized His power.
I am calling us to remembrance. I am calling us to a revelation. We cannot conquer sin without the Holy Spirit moving in our lives, supernaturally. We need to return to the Lord’s FULL power. Call on His FULLNESS! Christ left and sent us the Holy Spirit to benefit us. Let’s not compartmentalize that to only justification.
God, I am aware that I often “naturalize” things. I look around and rationalize things, making earthly excuses to why things are happening. Help me to actually seek truth. Help me to actually realize what is happening in a spiritual sense. God change my perception.
Let’s stop “naturally rationalizing” our friend’s struggles. Let’s open up about spiritual warfare and call it what it is! Don’t hesitate to call out Satan’s attacks in people’s lives and couple that with the reality that the ONLY way we are going to conquer it is with the Holy Spirit. We are not war with flesh and blood therefore using fleshly weapons is useless.
