21 1Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him.4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” 7 And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
25 years deep. That’s where we are when God finally fulfills the child portion of His promise. Can you imagine waiting 25 years for something, and during that time having to continue to do outrageous things only in faith? Counting on something only based on the promiser’s character… It’s important to note how seemingly hopeless all of this seemed to these humans. It wasn’t as though they had no doubts, no concerns that God wasn’t going to pull through. The reality is they had many doubts, many times where they thought it wasn’t going to happen (as we have seen) and they tried to fulfill it on their own. The reason it is important to analyze how God works at times in His promises is because we have to do that with our glorification. Glorification is the manifestation of our justification. We have been judicially marked righteous, but until that day that God returns and creates a new heaven and new earth we will not be Glorified. We will not receive the new body and experience the complete pressence of sin being removed until that great day. Scripture says in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” (2 Peter 3) Shall we join them or use the Scripture to remind us of God’s faithfulness even through His patience. We have been told that there is a new creation coming, now we wait, trusting God will fulfill His promise one day. No matter what the world around us shows/says we can trust what He said.
8 The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast. 9 But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking, 10 and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”
11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son. 12 But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned. 13 I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring.”
14 Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.
We are back to the illogical evaluation of God’s activities. We have to notice this when it happens. With human logic this all seems inconsistent. One time God tells Hagar to go back, the next He tells Abraham to send her away… If we dont realize that God makes His decisions based on facts that we don’t observe, we will assume we can make those decisions for ourselves. God can look into a heart and see if it is prepared to experience something. He can look into the future and know what circumstances they will endure on a certain path. THAT is why we have to consistently pray for the Spirit to guide us. Trying to make all of our decisions based upon the evidence around us and the fulfillment’s we SEE, is like trying to judge a human’s health based upon a pair of their socks we found. God, El Roi, sees all things, knows the future, the ACTUAL present, and truly understands the past. We are living within HIS creation and plan. If we want to know God’s thoughts, His direction, it won’t happen from ‘maturing into an understanding’ of creation. “For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 2) When someone tells you to follow your heart, to follow your thoughts, or to try and figure things out for themselves remember you’re called to speak, not in words taught to us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit.
Lord thank You for being patient when I strive to understand things only through my own wisdom. Help me to hear Your reminders to follow the Spirit and yield to what You would have me do! Keep me from falling into the same trap the world is experiencing: thinking I can logically explain everything in the world because I think I actually see everything. Amen.
This should be super encouraging for EVERYONE! The circumstances we see are only partial realities. You cannot base your perception of success/failure on only what you see. Otherwise as we march further into end times and you see the church fall further and further away from truth you would assume we are all doing something wrong. God tells us that this is the way the world will go, including those within the church. So whatever you see, whatever you’re experiencing, don’t assume it’s all failing just because your human brain says that. Seek the Spirit’s guidance and revelation about what is happening. Even when it all seems to be falling apart God may be restructuring your surroundings. Reconstruction often looks chaotic as it is being started.
