Breaking news: Last night, while you were sleeping, they took our Lord. We were told He was kneeling to pray in the Garden called Gethsemane. He knew what was coming, as He sweat blood from the intense anxiety about the actions before Him, the disciples slept. Just like you. The Master has gone and called us to be prepared, alert, and ready, yet our lives are characterized by spiritual slumber.
They didn’t see the crucial events before them and the gravity of what they, and we, are being called to do. Christ carried the stress of the entire world’s freedom from Satan, and the disciples slept. Before this arrest, He said (recorded in John 15) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.” He gives us a promise: don’t expect to be treated better than me. The only way to avoid it is to deny Him like Peter did.
He gave us an example: We are called to step out in faith in ANYTHING God calls us to do. That means everything… fear inducing, overwhelming, anxiety provoking, everything. We are to say as He did last night: “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” Our lives are His. The example is followed by another promise… come Sunday. We are going to see that God truly takes care of those who are humbly serving Him. The path is hard, but He is sufficient.
These same men who were sleeping as Christ showed us the image of what was to come for Him, them, and us, they were the same men who rejected Him. Where are you today? Are you willing to accept the cross, or are you Peter in your work, Peter in your home, Peter in your circle of friends. What is your life revolving around? We are called to prioritize Him in everything. What guides your life today?
Judas allowed the wrong things to guide his life, and afterward he regretted it deeply but it was too late. He had already done the damage. He tried to give back the money and undo it, but it was too late. Now, when it is not too late, will you follow our Lord’s example and lay down your life?
Spend 5 minutes thanking God for your salvation. Friend, this was an immense cost. Can you imagine stepping in and being beaten and hung on a cross so that the person who hates you the most would have an opportunity to inherit your goodness? As He hung on that cross He slowly suffocated. In the position they are crucified in they must push on the nails going into their ankles to hold themselves up so that they can breath. Christ, the one who created these humans, endured the beating… chunks of flesh ripped from His Holy back… Thorns pressed into His head. Nails piercing His wrists and ankle. The cross is dropped into place with the immense weight of His body jarring the three spikes going through His flesh… Pressing on the spike in His ankles He lifted Himself to pray, speak, and forgive. While this happened it was as if you yourself stood there before Him crying out CRUCIFY HIM! LET HIM DIE!
All this so that the veil which separated God from Man could be torn and you could experience God Himself coming to dwell within you. You are now the home for God. You are the temple. This day, will you reject Him or embrace Him. Will you cherish His wounds or in an attempt to save yourself from the minor cuts of rejection will you deny Him?
Accept today the blood of Christ. Accept it, embrace it, and share it. Your payment has been made. Yet without accepting Him many will endure a worse punishment when they die.
