Today is a short devotion because we have friends over, but we are going to do a worship stream in just an hour or so! Tune in on Facebook 🙂
27 Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.
Take care of those in need: In that society the orphans and widows were the groups of people that had no true provision in culture. This isn’t TRULY experienced in today’s society because a widow can still take care of herself, and in some cases be totally fine monetarily (life insurance, etc.). The principle here was to take care of people who were unable to give back or provide for themselves. As the Church we are called to care for those who may never be able to return the favor. Care for people who may end up continuously taking and never provide earthly “value” to our Church. We are called to do this because it is ultimately what God did. He reached down into our existence and gave everything for people who had no way to give back. Essentially the only things we can even give back now are the things God has given us (service through the Spirit, pointing people back to Jesus, etc.). To connect this back to the orphan and widow it is as if you gave a widow $100 and she gave back $10 of it, or gave $50 to other people. We are to invest in people for the sake of investing, not for the sake of return.
This is the Gospel: God gave everything expecting nothing. He loves when we redistribute the “wealth” (salvation) but it isn’t a requirement for us being saved. That is what the Church is called to do: Share God’s wealth without expecting a return.
Spend 1 minute thanking God for all He has done for you!! Then spend 2-3 minutes asking God to show you areas you can redistribute His spiritual wealth.
Easily put: start to give/love/serve never expecting a return!
