Matthew 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
The modern church age. Going, baptizing, but are we making disciples? We see around us the focus on missions, even evangelism. Yet how many churches push the day to day relationship over the weekly worship? How many pastors push their members to get with them during the week OVER going to church on Sunday? Ashamedly I have tried, grown weary trying to maintain both, tried again, and keep failing. Why? Because it is hard to break from the mold of modern christianity. We have been brainwashed to think this process of weekly gatherings is sufficient, in fact we have taken all aspects of the great commission (the verse above) and said we are FULFILLING it within those weekly worship gatherings. If our weekly gathering was sufficient why are people yearning to get back into church? It has been offered online in the same way… what has been missing? Fellowship. Fellowship, relationships, face to face interactions and unique input for THAT person which seems to be fulfilled in their small conversations before and after church.
Fellowship and relationships are the cornerstone for discipleship. SO perhaps churches will start to shift back towards what Christ called us to do. For the great commission doesn’t read: Come, listen, be baptized, and then leave. It says GO and “MAKE DISCIPLES.” The main command here is “make disciples” and we have skirted around it long enough. “I won’t let culture redefine the Bible,” that’s a statement we hear form lots of pastors who preach against certain culturally accepted things now, like homosexuality, licentious living, and other unorthodox teachings. Yet how many of us are applying this to the great commission? How many of us have allowed culture and the Catholic standard of public speeches for church to permeate our churches?
As a pastor I will not give way to these cultural norms. That includes the redefining of God’s Word when it comes to the Church. If we are not making disciples we are wrong. Something major is about to change. God has been convicting me for months now and I have been shamefully grieving the Spirit. Without knowing HOW I have simply stood wondering “what do You want me to do?!” From that lack of understanding I stood frozen without making changes. God doesn’t want to take away something that is benefiting people, but focusing on a weekly gathering is crippling us and is setup as a giant stone between us and the great commission. Therefore we MUST return Church, God is calling us to return to His pattern of Church and Covid has set us up to do this. Yet we are all relentlessly looking back at our old ways and trying to maintain them.
Spend 1 minute praying for God to guide you how to be a part of this movement… Then spend 2-3 minutes praying for your pastor, asking God to guide him to truth in how to break from this cultural deviation from Truth.
Find a group of 2 people or families that you can have as a small group. This will give you connection during hard times. We need this now more than ever.
