For some reason the social graphic won’t upload… I’ll post it later.
Help me to come to Scripture with an open mind, willing to learn and desiring to be closer to You. Help me to not just read the words to check off a box. Instead help me to read each phrase as it is, breathed from Your mouth prepared for me to hear and change. Amen.
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2:9-11 NIV
We move from yesterday’s passage which was highly controversial and maybe confusing to today’s passage which is pretty constantly viewed the same and clear as day: Jesus will be honored. The verses start with “therefore” indicating Christ’s high honor is due to His humbling position we spoke about yesterday. Due to Christ’s laying down of His abilities and becoming human He will be honored by every single being in existence. The fact that He would and COULD die for all mankind has given Him the place of honor.
This is a good example for our children (and ourselves). We have a chance to see the value system of God. Significant sacrifice equates great honor. The more that is offered as a sacrifice the greater the honor. Instead of living in a way that prioritizes self pleasure and amassing more THINGS to bring us honor we can see God’s perspective is that pouring ourselves out for others is where true greatness is found.
I think it’s interesting that God says Christ will be honored here because of His great sacrifice. NOT because He is God. It’s almost as if He is giving us this insight which shows we too can receive great honor in eternity if we are obedient. Insight which demonstrates our ranking of honor in heaven and with rewards (study the Bema Seat) is not based on our position or status but instead on our selfless service. I say “almost as if” but this is consistent with Scripture. God assigns honor and rewards after our lives here based on our selfless actions which we yield to the Spirit and obey.
This prompts a really good study, if you haven’t already done it. Look through Scripture for references to rewards and the Bema seat. I think you’ll find it interesting 🙂
God, help me to see worth in life after this one. Help me to focus my perspective on what You would have me to do here so that I can change the eternal destiny of others. Help me to stay focused NOT on Earthly things which will pass away but instead the rewards in which You have for me in eternity. Help me to remind myself daily that one day I will be standing in front of You and my deeds will be laid out before us and ALL the worthless deeds will be burned away.
Sacrifice for honor. Try to be intentional this week, doing 1 thing a day that is sacrificial and positive for someone else. Do not only do things which please you or lend to your profiting. Instead, go out of your way to do SOMETHING everyday which puts someone else above you, reflecting how Christ acted.
