20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.
Eager- looking forward to something, almost impatiently . That’s what our perspective of Christ’s return and our transformation should be. Not that of verses 18-19 which talked about being focused on Earthly things and how that leads to destruction, disillusionment, and defeat. Rather, focusing on Christ and His second coming. Paul is instructing us to be constantly looking forward to that. This is the end of the race, the finish line we should be striving so intently towards.
We have an incredible gift to be looking ahead for. There is something miraculous and powerful going to happen! Our citizenship will finally be actualized. We will no longer have to just have hope, just long for, just look ahead. It will be here. We will be transformed into the likeness of Him and no longer feel the presence of sin overwhelm us. No longer will be feel the brokenness of this fallen world. No longer feel anguish from the loved ones we lose. No longer deal with anger, frustration, depression. All of the disgusting effects of sin and man’s fall will be eliminated!!
Are you eagerly awaiting that or do you rarely think of it? Does it even cross your mind once a week? We should be like a child the night before Christmas. We should be wondering, often, what is it going to be like?! We are challenged to stop meditating on the things of this world, the things that are going to pass away. Instead focus on that great gift you will be receiving in the future. Be giddy, overwhelmed with anticipation. Christ is returning, be filled with hope.
God, it’s hard to focus on the things that aren’t so easily viewed around us. It is seemingly effortless to dwell on the circumstances that encompass us. Free my mind to meditate on You and Your return. Shed away the desires to focus on Earthly things which will bring no true satisfaction. Help me to realize the chains of sin are broken, I have a new priority and desire system now. Make my heart burn for You and Your return! Keep me from wasting countless time being eager about things of this world when there is a much greater gift coming for me. Thank You for reconciling me to Yourself, bringing me from foe to friend. I cherish You. Amen.
Go motivate some friends! Encourage your friends that there is some immense joy and freedom coming! Remind them that one day we will be standing in front of our King and all of this effort, straining, and pain will all seem meaningless! Remind them that though there is pain today, though the effects of our sins are abundant our Lord will soon wipe away all of that. Soon our Savior will return and defeat all of this darkness and pain! We have great hope in our God. Let’s enjoy that hope now.
