When you were a child was there ever something your parents told you not to do or touch? Perhaps they told you to actually eat your food, and that you’d get your dessert afterwards. Yet you were staring at the dessert almost feeling sick to your stomach. You want it now! So you are trying to eat, trying to do the right thing but you just hear the dessert calling out your name!
1)You’re mentally unstable, or about to eat a human. Your dessert should not speak. Get that looked at, maybe your childhood had some pretty significant impacts on your life that you need to discuss with someone.
2)Of course it was hard not to f0cus on the dessert you were staring at it and thinking about it!
Most of the time when we come to prayer we come to it with this “staring at the dessert” mentality. What I mean is that we focus on our problem while asking for help. We are asking God to fix the issue but while doing that we are fixated on the issue at hand. This preoccupying of our mind on the problem usually leads to a lack of faith. We want to believe God CAN do something, but as we are asking we are focused on the wall blocking it, and it seems giant.
One of the many advantages of praying God’s Word back to Him is that we take our minds off of the problems. We stop focusing on the waves while frantically asking Him to calm them and instead focus on the one calming them. We pray back truths about God and use God’s own Word to essentially petition for things to be done. Now instead of staring at the problem we are staring at the one who has the solution and repeating promises that the problem solver has told us. It’s easier to rest in peace when you’re staring at the one who is immovable instead of the walls that are trying to make us feel like they are.
Example of a normal prayer: God please help me stop feeling afraid about my kids not growing up properly. – in this prayer we see a lack of God’s own Words which give us a promise to rely on. How can He help me stop feeling afraid?!
Example of praying God’s Word: God Romans 8:28 says that we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. We know that everything in our life is being used to glorify you and bring deeper understanding to us. Help me to remember that you are actively working in my life. Remind me that YOU are in control. Remind me that Isaiah 41:10 says I have no reason to Fear for You are with me. I need not be dismayed for You are my God!! Help my soul be reminded that you will strengthen me, help me, and uphold me with your righteous hand. -That’s a sermon in a prayer lol. This is what praying could be…
Caveat: there are other benefits to praying the Word. This is just one of them.
Spend 1-2 minutes thanking God that you have His written Word! Then spend 2-3 minutes praying back God’s Word:
- Proverbs 19:21 ESV Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
- Proverbs 16:9 ESV The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.
- 1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
