Imagine, if you will, you enter a bank to open up a new account. There is a giant sign that says “New Accounts,” so you make the (safe) assumption that this is where you need to go. You wander over there and speak with the representative and they confirm the purpose of this department is to open new accounts. However, upon further pressing the person says that they haven’t opened a new account before, they don’t know how to open them, and generally they don’t spend their time opening accounts. Most of their time is spent talking about what new account holders look like, and the perks of having an account there. They just don’t make new accounts anymore… or ever.
It sounds crazy, but I think we may not see that this is happening right now. 2 Corinthians 5 18 says “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” We’ve been given a ministry of reconciliation (the end of the separation, caused by original sin, between God and humanity). John Calvin describes reconciliation as the peace between humanity and God that results from the expiation of religious sin and the propitiation of God’s wrath. (John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion (II.16.2)) We have this ministry, we are standing beneath the “New Accounts” sign, but rarely, if ever do the duty. Furthermore we act like we are here for no reason or that someone else will be the ones making major things happen in life.
You have a purpose. You, my friend, are the very vessel that Scripture says God is going using to “make his appeal through us!!” God has called you to be the tool He uses to reach the lost, to bring in the broken, and to free the weary. You need not aimlessly walk through life. God, the Creator, has chosen to work through YOU to perform His great ministry of reconciliation.
All we must do is keep our eyes focused on Him as much as possible. 2 Timothy 2:21 says if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work. God has chosen you and I to work through now. In the past we saw the breath of God exhaling grace and mercy into the world through Christ, the Prophets, and Israel. Now that same Spirit is flowing and emanating from you. Are you “ready for every good work?” That same passage says to flee the things of the flesh. No longer allow them to casually dwell with you. Flee the darkness and assure you’re sprinting towards the Son.
So, today, when you are downcast, sad, or unmotivated… remember that you have been elected for a great mission. You have been brought into a Holy family and given a Holy ministry. God has chosen you to speak and reconcile people through. You are cherished, and valuable to the One who made all things. You are an ambassador for the King, the Creator, the Eternal One. Keep your eyes up, it’s a prestigious task. 🙂
Spend 1-2 minutes thanking God that He has chosen to use you!! Then spend 2-3 minutes asking for help keeping your eyes on His ministry and not your dream life.
Begin to look around daily at people around you. Make a list of 10-15 people who are unsaved. Begin praying for them and looking for opportunities to share the Gospel.
