Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
Are you experiencing a collapse? As the torrent that is the world comes against you are you experiencing your very existing crash beneath you and around you? This could be for a variety of reasons. I just want to use this passage to encourage you.
The enemy is a liar. Often he will try to put on a show and lead you to believe something that isn’t true. This passage tells us that when the torrent comes if we build our life on Christ’s Word then we will not experience the crash beneath us. Yet the enemy will put on the grandest show you could ever imagine. He will use smoke and mirrors to lead you to believe the very house you’re dwelling in is falling apart and you need to be gripped with fear. He will try to lead you to think that what you are doing is worthless, impossible, and fruitless.
Take courage my friend, if you are building your home on God’s firm foundation you need not worry. God is here to keep you safe as you build upon His Word.
That doesn’t mean the enemy won’t attack you in the middle of the construction and try to pull you away. The very same thing happened in Nehemiah 4 when Nehemiah was building the walls to Jerusalem. Satan tried his hardest with attacks! The enemy will attack, but that doesn’t mean stop. The enemy will attack but that doesn’t mean it’s all falling down. The enemy will attack but that doesn’t mean we haven’t already won! Our God, the one who can speak things into being (like He did the world) has spoken the words of Luke 6. That means they are true.
Lemme point out: the foundation is God’s Word. Not your friends, not your job, not your education. Those things may fall, but they aren’t the foundation. Often times we look at God remodeling our lives and we lament like we are having the foundation shaken, yet He is simply removing some vines from the outside. Perhaps you have misunderstood what your foundation was. Other times we see the enemy throw rocks and break a window and we are torn. We fall to the ground kicking and screaming… God is just awkwardly looking at us like wow… what if you did that over your sin?
I would be amiss if I didn’t share the warning: this promise is for those building their life on the correct foundation. Assure you are building on His Word and promises, otherwise you’ll have no support and will experience a complete collapse and destruction.
Spend 1-2 minutes thanking God that He has given you His Word for assurance. Now, spend 2-3 minutes crying out the very thing we heard in Mark 9:24: “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” Pray for God to help you overcome the lies of the enemy!!
Find someone who can encourage you now in the trenches. You. need. community. Seriously. Find someone.
