John Paul Van Tiem heard the words “Well done” after dying peacefully on Friday, March 26th, 2021, aged 67. Born in Detroit on October 28th, 1953, he spent his childhood in Grosse Pointe Woods. After studying dentistry at the University of Michigan, he practiced for 30 years in Stockbridge, MI. In December 1976, he married Cindy Vernier, the love of his life for 44 years who survives him, along with their two children Nikki and Drew. He is also survived by his three brothers and many nieces and nephews. His Christian faith was dearly important to him and he taught Sunday School for adults and would occasionally preach over the years. For their entire married lives, he and Cindy lived next to water, first on North Lake, followed by Grass Lake. He loved being outside – skiing, sailing, boating, kayaking. He also loved playing pickleball in his later years and tennis before that. He loved life and made the most of it, seeking fun and enjoyment of his family and friends. In his retirement, he served as a chaplain for Hope Force International, eventually as their Head Chaplain, helping those affected by Natural Disasters. He will be remembered for his kindness and gentleness and the care he offered to people. He will be sorely missed, fondly remembered, and joyfully celebrated. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hope Force International, 7065 Moores Lane, Suite 200 Brentwood, TN 37027.
